Free Dental for Kids · Medicare CDBS

Your child’s $1,158 in free dental is sitting there. Use it before it expires.

If your family receives Family Tax Benefit Part A (or certain other Centrelink payments), your child qualifies for up to $1,158 in dental care over two years — fully covered by Medicare. Yet nearly 6 in 10 eligible Australian kids never use the benefit. Let’s change that.

The Numbers Behind CDBS

A free national program. Massively under-used.

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule has been running since 2014. After more than a decade, national utilisation is still well below 40% — meaning hundreds of thousands of eligible Australian children miss out on dental care they have already been allocated.

Why Using CDBS Now Matters

Six reasons to use your child’s benefit this year

Using CDBS is not just about the money. It is about setting up your child’s mouth, confidence, and dental relationship for the next 70 years.

Benefit

Habits formed in childhood last a lifetime

Children who attend regular dental check-ups learn brushing, flossing, and diet habits early — and carry them into adulthood. Skipping the early years means re-learning everything later, usually after a problem has already started.

Benefit

One dental team your child grows up with

Familiarity removes the fear. When the same gentle team sees your child year after year, dental visits feel routine instead of scary. That trust is the single biggest predictor of whether they keep going as adults.

Benefit

Prevention costs nothing. Treatment costs a lot.

A check-up, clean, and fluoride application under CDBS is free at the chair when your child is bulk-billed. A filling, root canal, or extraction later — outside CDBS — can cost hundreds or thousands. Catching it early is the cheapest option for every family.

Benefit

Confidence and self-esteem

Healthy teeth shape how a child smiles, speaks, and feels in photos and classrooms. Early dental care protects more than enamel — it protects how your child feels about themselves.

Benefit

Fewer emergencies, less time off work and school

Routine check-ups catch problems before they become 2 a.m. emergencies. That means fewer unplanned dental visits, fewer missed school days for your child, and fewer days off work for you.

Benefit

A real saving the family can use elsewhere

$1,158 every two years per eligible child is money your household keeps. For a family with two eligible children, that is over $2,300 in dental care — fully covered, no out-of-pocket — if you use it.

Quick Eligibility Check

Three boxes — is your family eligible?

If you can tick all three, your child almost certainly qualifies for CDBS. We will confirm it on the day with your Medicare card.

  • Your child is aged 0 to 17 for at least one day this calendar year.
  • Your child is eligible for Medicare.
  • Your family receives a qualifying Australian Government payment — most commonly Family Tax Benefit Part A. Parenting Payment, Carer Payment, Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY and Disability Support Pension also qualify.

CDBS FAQ

Common questions from parents

Will my child have to pay anything?

No — when your child's appointment is covered under CDBS at Y3 Smiles Dental, we bulk-bill Services Australia directly. There are no gap fees and no upfront payment for covered services, up to the $1,158 two-year cap.

What's covered under CDBS?

Check-ups, X-rays, scale and clean, fluoride applications, fillings, root canals, and extractions. Cosmetic treatments (such as whitening) and orthodontics are not covered. Our team will explain what is included before any treatment begins.

What if my child's treatment goes over $1,158?

We tell you in writing before any work begins, so there are no surprises. You can choose to pay the gap directly, use private health cover, or split the treatment across the next benefit period if appropriate.

How do I know my child is eligible?

Eligibility is assessed by Services Australia at the start of each calendar year. The fastest check is via your myGov Medicare account. We can also confirm it for you over the phone — call (03) 9022 4442 with your Medicare card handy.

Does the unused balance carry over to the next year?

Yes. The $1,158 cap applies across two consecutive calendar years, so any unused balance from year one can be used in year two — provided your child is still eligible.
