Dental care for veterans with a DVA card
We treat veterans and accept DVA cards. Veteran Gold Card holders usually have cover for dental care through DVA, and we claim on the spot through HICAPS. Some treatment needs DVA approval first, and we'll tell you before we start if it does. White Card cover is limited to conditions DVA has accepted.
What does the Gold Card cover at the dentist?
DVA pays for clinically necessary dental care for Gold Card holders under its own rules. In practice:
- Everyday care such as check-ups, cleans and fillings is usually covered.
- Some treatment needs approval first. For certain items, we apply to DVA before treatment and wait for its answer.
- Some treatment has a yearly limit. DVA caps spending on some items each year.
We check these before treatment and explain your plan, so you know what's covered before anything starts. On the day, we claim for Gold Card holders on the spot through HICAPS, the same way we do for health funds.
What about the White Card?
The White Card only covers treatment for conditions DVA has accepted as related to your service. Dental treatment is covered only if a dental condition is one of those, and usually needs DVA approval first. If you're unsure, contact DVA before booking. We can still see you as a private patient, and you can use a health fund if you have one.
What should I bring to my appointment?
- Your DVA card
- A list of any medicines you take
- Any letters from DVA about your dental treatment
See your first visit for what happens on the day, including parking and access. The clinic is on ground level, with free street parking out the front and accessible parking around the precinct.
Who will I see?
Y3 Smiles Dental in Broadmeadows is led by principal dentist Dr Fatima Kurnaz. Tell us if you'd like a particular dentist, or if you'd like a family member or carer with you. Veterans without a DVA card can see how health funds and payment plans work.
