Dental costs
How much does dental treatment cost?
It depends on what you need, so we give you a written, itemised quote before any treatment. Consultations start from $65. Your quote lists the ADA item numbers, so you can check your health fund rebate first, and nothing changes without us telling you.
Cost guides by treatment
- Check-up and clean costsThe new patient check-up, routine check-ups and what each includes.
- Emergency dental costsThe emergency consultation and the treatment that often follows.
- Children's dental costsChildren's check-ups, CDBS bulk billing and health funds.
- Root canal treatment costsWhy the number of canals changes the fee, and the crown that usually follows.
- Wisdom teeth removal costsSimple against surgical removal, all four together, and the separate anaesthetist fee.
- Dental implant costsA single implant, dentures that clip onto implants, and full-arch treatment.
- Using super for dental treatmentWhen the ATO can release super, and what to consider first.
What changes the cost of dental treatment?
Two people with "a filling" can have quite different treatment. The fee depends on:
- How much of the tooth is involved. A small filling on one surface takes less time than rebuilding a broken tooth.
- Which tooth it is. Back teeth are harder to reach and often have more roots.
- Whether lab work is needed. Crowns, bridges and dentures are made to fit you, which adds to the cost.
- How many visits it takes. Root canal treatment and dentures usually need more than one appointment.
- What we find. X-rays sometimes show more, or less, than we expected.
That's why our cost pages show starting fees, and why we examine you before quoting a final figure.
How do I find out what my treatment will cost?
Examination
Your dentist examines your teeth, takes x-rays if needed and explains what they find.
Written treatment plan
You get an itemised plan with the ADA item number for each part of your treatment. It's valid for 30 days.
Check your rebate
Ring your health fund with the item numbers, or ask us for a rebate estimate and a written breakdown of any out-of-pocket cost.
You decide
If something changes partway through, such as a filling that turns out to need root canal treatment, we stop, explain and re-quote before going ahead.
How do health funds and Medicare help with the cost?
We accept all health funds with HICAPS on-the-spot claiming, so you pay only the difference on the day. With general dental extras cover, check-ups and cleans are usually gap free, depending on your level of cover. Most other treatment has some out-of-pocket cost. See health funds and HICAPS.
Medicare doesn't cover general dental treatment for adults in private clinics. Eligible children are bulk billed under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, and we plan their treatment to stay within the limit.
Can I spread the cost?
Yes. Afterpay Pay in 4, humm and TLC are available, each subject to its own approval and terms. humm and TLC loans are credit, so fees and interest may apply. For orthodontic treatment, including clear aligners, we offer our own interest-free plan by direct debit, worked out case by case. We also have current clear aligner offers. See payment plans for how each works.
What if I can't afford the treatment I need?
Talk to us. We can often stage treatment so the most urgent work happens first and the rest follows when you're ready. We'll also tell you about other options. If you hold a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, DPV Health in Broadmeadows provides public general and emergency dental care, with a waiting list. For some people that is the right choice, and we'll say so.
At Y3 Smiles Dental in Broadmeadows, every fee is explained before treatment starts. Principal dentist Dr Fatima Kurnaz reviews the information on this page.
Other questions people ask
Is the first appointment free?
We offer a free discovery session with our patient coordinator, where you can see the clinic, ask questions and talk through costs. Book online and write "free discovery session" in the message, or call us. It is not a clinical appointment. A dental examination is always a paid appointment, because a diagnosis needs one.
Do I pay a deposit before treatment?
No deposit is needed for lab work such as crowns or dentures. You pay on the day for the treatment you have that day.
Do you offer discounts or concession rates?
No, we don't offer concession rates or discounts. Instead, we explain your costs in writing before treatment and can stage treatment to spread it out.
Does Medicare cover adult dental treatment?
Not general dental treatment in a private clinic. Eligible children can be covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, and adults with a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card may be eligible for public dental care.
