Meet Dr Fatima

A 34-second introduction from Dr Fatima at the clinic. Captions are on, so you can watch with the sound off.

Growing up in Broadmeadows

Dr Fatima grew up in Broadmeadows, in the Turkish community her grandparents became part of when they arrived in Melbourne in the late 1960s. Her father is a GP on Blair Street, a short walk from Y3 Smiles Dental, and still practises there today, so she saw early what it means to care for people as neighbours as well as patients. Speaking Turkish at home and English at school, she also saw how language can get in the way of good healthcare, particularly for older people and new arrivals.

Where did she train and work?

She graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 2014, then moved to the Northern Territory. There she treated patients from many cultural backgrounds and managed complex cases, and progressed to Senior Dentist and Clinical Manager at the special needs dental clinic at Royal Darwin Hospital, leading clinical teams and caring for patients with complex medical and special needs.

In 2019 she returned to Melbourne to be closer to family, and worked across private practices in general and restorative dentistry before opening Y3 Smiles Dental in the community that raised her.

How does she approach care?

Her time in special needs dentistry shaped a calm, patient approach that suits anyone who finds the dentist hard, whether that's an adult who has put off treatment for years or a child at a first visit. She explains each step clearly, in Turkish or English, and involves families in decisions when patients want that.

A large part of her work is helping adults who are unhappy with their smile. She provides clear aligner treatment, veneers, composite bonding and teeth whitening, and plans smile makeovers that may combine them. Her position is conservative: where crowding or a tooth out of line is the complaint, moving the tooth is usually better than covering it, and where veneers are the right answer she favours the option that keeps the most natural tooth. Every plan starts with an examination and a written, itemised quote.
