Child Dental Benefits Schedule

CDBS bulk billing for children

Eligible children are bulk billed under CDBS at Y3 Smiles Dental in Broadmeadows, up to the $1,158 two-year limit, and we plan treatment to stay within it. CDBS covers basic dental care like check-ups, x-rays, cleans, fillings and extractions for eligible children aged 0 to 17.

Who is eligible for CDBS?

A child can use the Child Dental Benefits Schedule if they:

  • are aged 0 to 17 for at least one day of the calendar year,
  • are eligible for Medicare, and
  • they, or their parent or carer, receive a relevant Australian Government payment at least once in the year, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A.

Eligibility is assessed each year by Services Australia. The full conditions are on the Services Australia CDBS page.

What does CDBS cover?

CDBS covers basic dental services, including examinations, x-rays, cleaning, fissure sealants, fillings, root canal treatment, extractions and partial dentures. It doesn't cover orthodontics such as braces, cosmetic dental work, or dental services in a hospital.

How does the two-year limit work?

Each eligible child has a capped benefit over two consecutive calendar years. The two years start when your child has their first CDBS service. Anything left in the first year can be used in the second, but it doesn't carry over after that. The current limit applies to two-year periods starting in 2026. Children whose period started earlier keep the limit that applied then.

How does bulk billing work at Y3 Smiles Dental?

For covered services, we claim the benefit directly from Services Australia and accept it as full payment, so there is no gap to pay. Before any treatment starts, we explain what's proposed, what it would cost and how it will be billed, and a parent or guardian signs a consent form. We plan treatment to stay within your child's available balance. If something isn't covered, we tell you in advance.

Why use it?

Regular check-ups find problems early, when they're simpler to treat, and help children feel comfortable at the dentist. Many eligible children don't use their benefit, and the balance expires at the end of each two-year period. If your child hasn't had a check-up recently, it's a good time to book.

Other questions people ask

Will I have to pay anything?

For services covered under CDBS and within your child's available balance, we bulk bill, so there's nothing to pay on the day. If anything isn't covered or would go over the limit, we tell you and get your agreement in writing first.

Does the balance roll over?

Within the two calendar years, yes. Any balance left in the first year can be used in the second, as long as your child is still eligible. It doesn't carry past the end of the two years.

Can we use CDBS at a private dentist?

Yes. CDBS can be used at participating private practices like Y3 Smiles Dental, as well as public dental clinics.

Does CDBS cover braces?

No. Orthodontics, cosmetic treatment and dental services in hospital are not covered. Custom sports mouthguards are not covered either, although some extras policies contribute.

What do I need to bring?

Your child's Medicare card. A parent or guardian also needs to sign a consent form before treatment.

How do I check my child's balance?

Through your Medicare online account in myGov, or by calling Services Australia. We can also check it for you at the appointment.
