Dental check-up and clean
A check-up and clean finds problems early and removes plaque and tartar that brushing misses. At Y3 Smiles Dental in Broadmeadows it includes an examination, x-rays if needed, oral cancer screening, a professional scale and clean, and a personalised plan.
What is check-up and clean?
Regular check-ups are how small problems get caught before they become painful or expensive. A comprehensive visit at Y3 Smiles Dental starts with a review of your medical history and any concerns. The dentist then examines your teeth, gums and the soft tissues of your mouth, checks your bite and existing fillings or crowns, and screens for oral cancer and other changes. Your gum health is assessed, and intraoral photos and x-rays are taken as needed to see what isn't visible to the eye, such as decay between teeth or changes in the bone. Next comes a professional scale and clean to remove plaque, tartar and stains, followed by a fluoride treatment. Finally, we talk you through what we found and give you a personalised quote and treatment plan for anything that needs attention. Most people benefit from a check-up and clean every six months, and some people need to come more often. Your dentist will recommend what suits you.

Your gums bleed when you brush
Bleeding gums are a common early sign of gum inflammation that a clean and advice can help with.

What's included in a comprehensive check-up?
A comprehensive oral examination, oral cancer and pathology screening, a gum assessment, intraoral photos, x-rays as necessary, a professional scale and clean, fluoride treatment, and a personalised quote and treatment plan.
How often should I have a check-up and clean?
Most people should come in every six months.
If you have gum disease, diabetes, smoke, or have other risk factors, your dentist may suggest more frequent visits.
Is the clean painful?
Professional cleans are generally comfortable.
Some people feel mild sensitivity, especially if it's been a while since their last clean. Let us know and we can help make it more comfortable.
Why are dental x-rays needed?
X-rays show problems that can't be seen in a visual examination, such as decay between teeth, bone loss and infection.
We take x-rays only as needed for your situation.

Other questions people ask
What happens if you find a problem?
We explain what we've found, talk through your options and give you a personalised plan and quote. Treatment is prioritised by urgency and your preferences.
How can I look after my teeth between visits?
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily, limit sugary snacks and drinks, and avoid tobacco. We'll give you advice for your own mouth.
Can I claim a check-up and clean on my health fund?
If you have extras cover with general dental, you can usually claim part of it. We claim on the spot through HICAPS so you only pay the gap.
Are check-ups for children different?
Children have their own check-up appointments, and eligible children may be covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule. Ask us about children's dentistry.
What if my gums need a deeper clean?
If you have gum disease, a deeper clean below the gum line may be recommended. It's quoted at your assessment.
Can I have a check-up and clean while pregnant?
Yes, and it is one of the more useful appointments to keep while pregnant, because gums are more reactive then and a clean removes what they are reacting to. Tell us you are pregnant when you book so the appointment is planned around it.
Should I bring my night splint or mouthguard to a check-up?
Yes, please do. We check how an appliance is wearing and whether it still fits, and a guard that no longer fits is not protecting much. It takes a minute and it is easy to forget.
What should I bring to my first visit?
Your health fund card, a list of any medicines you take, and any recent dental x-rays if you have them.
