Comparing the two

Braces or clear aligners?

Braces are fixed to the teeth and work continuously, and they handle the widest range of cases, including bites that need real correction. Clear aligners are removable, easier to clean around and hard to notice, and they only work while they are being worn. Which suits you depends on the case first and on your life second.

The real difference is who has to remember

Both of these move teeth by applying gentle pressure over months. The mechanics differ less than the marketing suggests. What genuinely differs is where the responsibility sits.

Braces are bonded on. They work while you sleep, while you forget about them and while you are busy, and the appointments are the only thing you have to turn up for. The cost is that they are in the way of eating and cleaning for the whole of treatment.

Clear aligners come out. You eat what you like and you brush normally, and in exchange the treatment depends entirely on you putting them back in for the hours you were told. People who are honest with themselves about that choose well. People who are not end up in treatment far longer than they were told.

What do we provide, and what do we not?

Worth saying plainly, because it shapes any advice you get anywhere. Y3 Smiles Dental provides clear aligner treatment. We do not provide braces.

That means we have an obvious interest in aligners being the answer, and the only useful response to that is to tell you where they are not. Cases that need the bite itself corrected, cases where teeth have to move a long way, cases involving growth in a younger patient, and cases where someone already knows they will not wear a removable appliance are all better treated with braces, and they are referred to an orthodontist rather than attempted here.

You do not need a referral to be assessed, and you will not be charged for a plan we cannot carry out. The assessment is done by principal dentist Dr Fatima Kurnaz, a general dentist rather than a registered specialist.

What is the question almost nobody asks first?

Whether the teeth need treating at all. Not every set of crooked or crowded teeth is a problem. The two things worth checking are whether you can actually clean them, since crowding that traps plaque causes real damage over decades, and whether they bother you. If the answer to both is no, doing nothing is a legitimate plan and you should hear it offered.

Where treatment is worth doing, the second question is what happens afterwards. Both routes end with a retainer, worn long term, because teeth drift back towards where they came from throughout life. That is not an upsell. It is the difference between a result that lasts and one you pay for twice.

Other questions people ask

Are braces better than aligners?

For some cases yes, for many cases neither is better, and for a few aligners suit the person far more than the teeth require braces. Braces handle the widest range of problems, particularly where the bite itself has to change or where teeth need to be moved a long way. Where a case is within what aligners can do, the results are the results, and the difference is what living with it is like.

Do you provide braces at Y3 Smiles Dental?

No. We provide clear aligner treatment. If your case would be better treated with braces, you will be told that at the assessment and referred to an orthodontist, and you will not be talked into aligners because aligners are what we do.

What happens if I do not wear the trays enough?

The treatment stops progressing and the trays stop fitting, because each one is made for where your teeth should have got to. It is the single most common reason aligner treatment runs over. If you already know you would not wear something for most of the day, that is useful information and it points towards braces.

Which is faster?

That depends on the case rather than on the appliance, and anyone quoting you a duration before looking at your teeth is guessing. What does change the timeline is how far the teeth have to move and, with aligners, whether they are actually worn.

Are aligners better for my gums?

They make cleaning easier, which matters. Brackets and wires trap plaque, and the white marks some people are left with after braces come from plaque sitting around the brackets rather than from the braces themselves. With aligners you take them out and brush normally, so the risk sits with how well you clean rather than with the appliance.

Do I need a referral to be assessed?

No. Come and be assessed. If aligners suit your case we can treat it here, and if the case belongs with an orthodontist you will leave knowing that and with a referral.

Will my teeth stay straight afterwards?

Only if you wear a retainer, and that applies equally to both. Teeth drift back towards their old positions throughout life, which is why retention is a long-term habit rather than a final appointment. It is the most common reason adults ask about straightening for a second time.
