Clear aligner costs

How much do clear aligners cost in Melbourne?

At Y3 Smiles Dental in Broadmeadows, clear aligner treatment runs from $3,000 to about $10,000, depending on how much movement is needed and how long treatment takes. Your figure is quoted in writing after the assessment, and retainers and teeth whitening are included in the treatment fee.

What does the fee actually cover?

Not trays. The trays are the cheapest part of aligner treatment and the least of what you are paying for. The fee covers the assessment and records that the plan is built from, the planning itself, the full sequence of trays for your case, the review appointments where progress is checked against the plan, and the adjustments made when a tooth is not moving the way it was supposed to.

That is why a number quoted before anyone has looked at your teeth is not a quote. What the treatment involves is on the clear aligners page.

What does it cost at Y3 Smiles Dental?

These are the ends of the range. Your figure is confirmed in writing after the assessment.

What moves it up the range?

  • How many teeth are moving. A few front teeth is a different job from both arches.
  • How far they have to move. Rotating a tooth or closing a large space takes more stages than levelling a mild crowd.
  • How long treatment runs. Longer treatment means more trays and more review appointments, both of which are real cost.
  • Whether the bite has to change. Movements that alter how the teeth meet are more demanding than ones that only tidy the front.
  • Whether anything is needed first. Decay and gum disease are treated before any movement is planned, and that is quoted separately.
  • Refinements. Some cases need an extra short series at the end to finish properly. Ask whether that is inside your quote or additional.

What to check before you compare two quotes

Aligner quotes are hard to compare because they are not all selling the same thing. Before you put two side by side, establish four things about each: whether the assessment and records are included or extra, whether retainers are included, whether refinements at the end are included, and how many review appointments the fee covers. At Y3 Smiles Dental, refinements are included at the planning stage, so they are inside the quote rather than a surprise later.

A quote that looks several thousand dollars cheaper has usually excluded at least one of those. That is not necessarily dishonest, but it does mean the two numbers are not describing the same treatment, and the gap tends to close by the time you finish.

Is the interest-free plan available for this?

Orthodontic treatment, including clear aligners, is the one area where Y3 Smiles Dental may offer an interest-free in-house arrangement. It is a direct debit worked out case by case and discussed when you get your quote, rather than a standard product with fixed terms. Afterpay Pay in 4, humm and TLC are available as well, each subject to its own approval and terms, and payment options sets out how each one works.

Aligner treatment also runs over months by its nature, so the payments and the treatment tend to line up without anyone having to engineer it.

Who does the treatment, and does that change the cost?

Clear aligner treatment at Y3 Smiles Dental is provided by principal dentist Dr Fatima Kurnaz. She is a general dentist rather than a registered specialist, and she does the assessment, plans the treatment and sees you at the reviews.

Where a case is better handled by a specialist, she will say so and refer you, and a specialist's fees are their own. Come and be assessed either way: if aligners suit your case we can treat it here, and if they do not, you leave knowing what would work rather than guessing.

Other questions people ask

Why is the range so wide?

Because a case involving a few front teeth and a case involving both arches are genuinely different pieces of work. The fee follows how much movement is needed and how long treatment runs, and those are set by your teeth rather than by a package. The plan you are given names your figure inside that $3,000 to $10,000 range.

Is the assessment free?

No. The clinical assessment is a normal paid appointment, because it includes an examination, x-rays and the records the treatment plan is built from. If you would rather see the clinic and ask questions first, you can book a free discovery session with our patient coordinator, which is not a clinical appointment.

Are retainers included?

Yes. At Y3 Smiles Dental your retainers are included in the clear aligner treatment fee, and so is teeth whitening. When you compare quotes, check whether the other quote includes retainers too. Teeth drift back towards where they started for life, so retainers are the part that keeps what you paid for.

Can I pay it off?

Orthodontic treatment, including clear aligners, is the one area where Y3 Smiles Dental may offer an interest-free in-house arrangement, worked out case by case as a direct debit and discussed at the quote stage. Afterpay Pay in 4, humm and TLC are also available, each with its own approval and terms. humm and TLC arrange credit, so fees apply and interest may apply.

Will my health fund pay towards aligners?

Extras cover with orthodontic benefits usually contributes something, but orthodontic limits are often separate from general dental limits, and there may be a waiting period and a lifetime cap rather than an annual one. Take the item numbers on your written quote to your fund and ask about your specific policy.

Are there current offers?

Yes, and their full terms are set out on our clear aligners page for Broadmeadows, which is where they are claimed. The discount comes off the total fee in your written plan, and health fund rebates are based on what you are actually charged after the discount.

Is a cheaper mail-order aligner worth considering?

The figure is lower because the examination, the x-rays and the in-person supervision are not in it. Moving teeth changes the bite and the bone around them, which is why the assessment and the review appointments exist. If something is not moving as planned, somebody has to see it.
